Craftswomen from the villages of Jessore, Bangladesh, handcraft our Kantha stitched cushions. The jute, re-usable bag in which our cushions are packaged, are also handmade by the women of Jessore. They are trained and supported within a fair trade framework, and are paid a fair wage which enables them to send their children to school, contribute to the household income, and still have money for their personal needs. The alternative for the women of Jessore District, is working in the underpaid garments industry, which would require them to leave their homes and villages.
Kantha (the textile used in our cushions) was traditionally used in Bangladesh to wrap and protect babies, and a gift from mother to daughter on the occasion of marriage. Today Kantha has become a commercial form of textile goods in which two or three fabrics have been sewn together with a running stitch to make a quilt or home decor items.
All Kantha cushions are weaved and stitched completely by hand, using natural hand-dyed materials. The beauty in each piece are the variations that occur. The natural dyes and the production process - such as drying fabrics naturally under the sun - creates a responsible waste management process and other environmental benefits.
By purchasing our products, you are helping to maintain socio-economic viability and a sustainable lifestyle for the artisans and producers.
